چکیده

We perform a self-consistent analysis of the nonlinear interaction of magnetized plasmas with electron-cyclotron (EC) waves. A closed set of equations is derived, which consists of the relativistic equations of motion under the wave field and the wave equation for the vector potential. The plasma is described in terms of ensembles of electrons which collectively determine the evolution of the wave amplitude and frequency through the current response. This description allows for effects of the electron motions on the efficiency of the wave absorption, for example, the asynchrony between the wave phase and the gyroperiod. As an application, we study the absorption of an EC wave beam in a simplified tokamak geometry, for plasma parameters relevant to current and future fusion experiments. We conclude that, within the limits of our model, there are cases where the linear theory for the absorption of EC waves, used widely in the current literature, may overestimate the energy deposition. In such cases, nonlinear effects are essential for the accurate estimation of the plasmawave coupling and their inclusion should be considered, especially when the wave power is dramatically increased as in the case of ITER.

Scaling Laws for the Cyclotron Resonance Laser Accelerator

The nonlinear interaction of a tenuous continuous electron beam with a traveling electromagnetic wave in the cyclotron resonance laser accelerator is analyzed using a single-particle model and multi-particle simulation. It is found that the maximum beam energy gain and acceleration distance obey certain scaling laws for optimized systems, and that the maximum energy gain is limited primarily by...

Self Consistent Calculations of Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating in Toroidal Plasmas

A method for self consistent calculations of ion cyclotron resonance heating has been developed. The dielectric tensor is calculated from a particle distribution function calculated with the orbit averaged Monte Carlo code fido. The tensor is then fed into the global wave code lion. The calculated wave field and power partitions are fed back into the fido code. By using two existing codes in an...

A Study of Bit Condition for Generation Rx -Mode Waves: Interaction of Particles with Z/UH-Mode Waves

Interactions of charge particles with electromagnetic waves have important effects (linear and nonlinear) on the propagation of electromagnetic waves, and it can somewhat play a role in generation of the new mode waves. Besides, the particle energies can play an important role in causing instability in plasma. The values of parallel energy of the particles have been calculated so that they can ...

Analysis of the Cyclotron Radiation from Relativistic Electrons Interacting with a Radio-frequency Electromagnetic Wave

The emission of electromagnetic radiation from charged particles spiraling around magnetic fields is an important effect in astrophysical and laboratory plasmas. In theoretical modeling, issues still not fully resolved are, among others, the inclusion of the recoil force on the relativistic electron motion and the detailed computation of the radiation power spectrum. In this paper, the cyclotro...
